“I´m not that old, I don´t need a rollator!”
It’s a fairly common comment when people are asked about a rollator for the first time. But a walker is not a sign of aging – rather a sign of wisdom and foresight.
How do I then choose the right walker? There are rollators that can be used in any environment and others better suited for only indoor or outdoor use. If you frequently transport the walker, then think about its weight and folding possibilities.
Let us help you find your ideal rollator and guide you on its care and use. Read some important tips listed below.
How do I choose the right rollator for me?
Consider the following before purchasing a rollator:
1. Which rollator should I use?
There are rollators that are good for every environment and others more suited for just indoor use. If using your rollator outside or on uneven surfaces, choose a rollator with large and stable wheels. If you mostly use it indoors, smaller wheels ensure walking is smooth. If you frequently transport it, think about weight and folding possibilities.
2. What size should it be?
The seat should feel roomy with sufficient distance between the handles so you do not have to squeeze into the seat. Make sure the width of the rollator fits through your doorways. A rollator that can partially fold while walking is ideal for narrow doorways. Your feet should rest comfortably on the ground when you sit down on your rollator.
4. How do I choose the right handle?
With weak or painful hands or wrists, anatomically shaped handles will spread the weight over a wider area of the palm thus reducing stress and making the use of the brake much easier.
5. How do I set the correct handle height?
When you stand straight, the handles should meet your wrist and arms should be slightly bent at the elbows (about 20 to 30 degree angle).
6. What wheels are appropriate?
Larger wheels facilitate walking on uneven ground while small wheels are better for indoor use.
7. What accessories do I need?
We offer a wide assortment of accessories to make your rollator individually yours! From deep baskets that are ideal for your groceries, to soft bags that can be left on the rollator while it is partially folded, to cane holders and trays – all our accessories will make your day to day outings easier and more enjoyable!
Tips for walking and using your rollator
1. Correct adjustment of the handles is important.
A handle that is too high or too low may cause unnecessary strain on arms, shoulders, neck and back. The handles should never be angled outwards.
2. Walk inside the walker rather than pushing it in front of you.
Some of our rollators feature a seat that can be folded up so that you can walk even closer to the rollator. Stand up straight and think of your posture!
3. Do not walk too fast, the ground may be uneven.
Take it gently over thresholds and curbs, especially if you have something in the basket or bag.
4. The walker must always be locked when sitting.
This ensures the walker will not roll away on you.
5. Keep the walker clean and check functions regularly.
Maintenance should be done by an authorized dealer every year.
6. Your physical fitness is important!
Continue to work out, especially strength and balance (see tips below).
Tips for training
1. Stand up – sit down!
Find a comfortable seat and sit down. Okay, now get up. Ten more times, twice a day. It must be exhausting doing something this good for you.
2. Heel raises strengthen your calves!
Stand firmly while supporting yourself and go up on tiptoe, 10 times or more each day.
3. Stand on one leg!
But be sure to have something secure to grab onto while attempting this exercise! Set a target for how many seconds you want to complete. Alternate legs and try and beat your own record every day.
4. Enjoy the sunshine!
The best exercise is always a nice walk every day! Take your trusty rollator for a stroll, get some Vitamin D, increase stamina. It is important to constantly work on trying to maintain or improve strength and balance!
